Beaufort: Island of Wild Horses
From the Beaufort Waterfront, you can buy a round-trip ticket to Shackleford Banks, where humans haven't lived for a century. The residents are 100+ wild horses descended from shipwrecked Spanish steeds or 19th century Carolinians. This 9-mile isle in the National Park Service's Cape Lookout National Seashore belongs to them.

Town of Atlantic Beach Parking Program Outline
Starting on May 19th and lasting through September 3, the town of Atlantic Beach will again implement a paid public parking program at a number of its premium 300 beachfront parking spaces for the 2012 Summer season.
In 2011, this program derived $120,000.00 from over 14,000 cars. Many locals were unhappy with the new parking rules and asked the question, "Why do we charge to park?" The answer is that it provides beach services which include paid summer lifeguards seven days a week along with public beach bath houses, daily garbage pickup, and free summer recreational family programs. These programs include Memorial Day and Fourth of July celebration fireworks, free family outdoor movie nights and the cost of safety traffic enforcement.
Rates: $10.00 for a full day; $5.00 after 2pm
The charge also includes a hang tag which allows the patron to come and go or transfer to another paid parking area, if space available, that same day, with no extra cost. No reserved spaces. Cash and cards accepted. No checks and no refunds for rain-outs.
Valid Handicap Tag or Plate: Free parking
Atlantic Beach Property Owner: Free parking with display of Town Hurricane re-entry pass on dashboard
Atlantic Beach Renters: One free season pass with proof of Atlantic Beach residence (utility/cable TV bill or NC Drivers license)
A Non-resident Season pass can be purchased at a cost of $50.00
